The Isolated Building Studies seek to prompt questions about historical processes of community change by engaging buildings at odds with their contexts.  As urban buildings, each building’s form illustrates its anticipated connection with adjacent structures: vertical, boxy, an architecture confined by palpably limited parcels. When neighbouring buildings are absent, a tension emerges: the urban form clashes with the seemingly suburban, even rural setting.  The Studies launch from this friction.

Biography: David Schalliol is a photographer and sociologist living in Chicago, Illinois, USA. His interest in the role of inequality in the construction of the built environment currently motivates several intersecting projects exploring the transformation of urban centers. His writing and photographs have appeared in such publications as Revue Geste, The American Sociologist, StadtBauwelt and American Photo, as well as in documentary projects by the National Film Board of Canada and other not-for-profit organizations. http://davidschalliol.com
