In mid-2023, experts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management recorded a new visibility record on Powidzkie Lake, Poland. 10.38 meters of water transparency vertically down. The largest lake in Greater Poland has been named the cleanest in the country. The basin is under a silence zone. It has a well-developed flora and fauna and has long remained a popular leisure and recreation spot.

A parallel reality unfolds in the lake's immediate vicinity. Only a few kilometers away, in 1953 and during the Cold War, the Soviets commenced constructing a military airbase, and to this day, it remains Poland's most immense military airfield. A few years ago, the Pentagon revealed a top-secret Strategic Air Command Nuclear Weapons Requirements Study for 1959. Among the approximately 2,300 targets within the Eastern Bloc countries and China that the U.S. Strategic Air Command aimed to bomb with nuclear weapons should World War III break out also stands the Powidz airport. The target number was 0169-8629 5223-01750.

It currently houses the 33rd Airlift Base, accommodating, among others, large C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. Powidz is also home to at least a thousand U.S. troops. In 2023, a new LTESM-C logistics and equipment complex opened on the land adjacent to the base for long-term storage and repair of U.S. Army equipment. So far, around 100 hectares of forest have disappeared for the base expansion, some of which lie within the Natura 2000 area and the Powidz Landscape Park. Wide roads and roundabouts capable of accommodating heavy equipment emerged in places that a few years ago only saw field tracks. Near the base, service points addressed to American soldiers open continuously. The MSA combat assets depot, DABS mobile airbase system storage facilities, and a BFS fuel depot are also under construction.

Such investments have resulted in the Powidz facility becoming a vast aviation, logistics, and equipment complex and a leading European NATO base, certainly listed as a strategic target, yet obviously of a different superpower than before. The airport, the base, the forests, the surrounding villages, and the lake received a new number. 

The project was possible thanks to the funding from the budget of the Wielkopolska Region under the grant of the Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region in the field of culture.

W połowie 2023 roku eksperci z Instytutu Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej odnotowali na Jeziorze Powidzkim nowy rekord widzialności, wynoszący 10,38 metra przezroczystości wody pionowo w dół. Największe jezioro w Wielkopolsce zostało tym samym ogłoszone najczystszym w Polsce. Akwen objęty jest strefą ciszy, ma dobrze rozwiniętą florę i faunę, a od dziesięcioleci stanowi popularne miejsce rekreacji i wypoczynku. 

W bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie jeziora rozgrywa się równoległa rzeczywistość. Zaledwie kilka kilometrów od niego w 1953 roku, w czasach zimnej wojny, Sowieci rozpoczęli budowę bazy lotnictwa wojskowego i do dziś jest to największe polskie lotnisko wojskowe. Kilka lat temu Pentagon ujawnił ściśle tajne opracowanie Studium wymagań broni nuklearnej strategicznego dowództwa lotniczego na rok 1959. Pośród około 2300 celów w krajach bloku wschodniego i Chinach, jakie amerykańskie lotnictwo strategiczne miało zbombardować przy użyciu bomb nuklearnych w razie wybuchu III wojny światowej, znajduje się też lotnisko w Powidzu. Numer tego celu to 0169-8629 5223-01750. 

Obecnie mieści się tu 33 Powidzka Baza Lotnictwa Transportowego, która jest miejscem stacjonowania m.in. dużych transportowych samolotów C-130 Hercules. W Powidzu stacjonuje też co najmniej tysiąc żołnierzy amerykańskich. W 2023 roku na terenie przyległym do bazy został otwarty nowy kompleks logistyczno-sprzętowy LTESM-C, którego celem jest długoterminowe magazynowanie i naprawa sprzętu US Army. Do tej pory pod rozbudowę bazy wycięto już około 100 hektarów lasów, z których część leżała na terenie obszaru Natura 2000 i Powidzkiego Parku Krajobrazowego. W miejscach, gdzie jeszcze kilka lat temu były jedynie polne drogi, pojawiły się szerokie szosy i ronda zdolne pomieścić ciężki sprzęt. W okolicach bazy, z myślą o amerykańskich żołnierzach, powstają punkty usługowe. W budowie znajdują się także: składy środków bojowych MSA, magazyny mobilnego systemu bazy lotniczej DABS i skład paliwa BFS.

W rezultacie tych inwestycji ośrodek w Powidzu staje się dużym kompleksem lotniczo-logistyczno-sprzętowym i jedną z ważniejszych europejskich baz NATO, która z pewnością jest na liście celów strategicznych, choć rzecz jasna innych mocarstw niż dawniej. Lotnisku, bazie, lasom, okolicznym wioskom i jezioru nadano nowy numer. 

Projekt zrealizowano przy pomocy środków z budżetu Województwa Wielkopolskiego w ramach stypendium Marszałka Województwa Wielkopolskiego w dziedzinie kultury.

Artist Bio:

Karol Szymkowiak is constantly fascinated in finding surrealism by recording reality using photography. Karol’s work revolves around themes such as environmental problems, military and civil defence, physical and mental immobilisation. A self-taught photographer, photobook artist, curator and educator based in Poznań, Poland that has participated in over a dozen group exhibitions.

Karol is a member of ZPAF, The Association of Polish Art Photographers, and recipient of a scholarship from the Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region in the field of culture.

Karol is also a lecturer in photography at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. In 2025, he was nominated by Fotofestiwal Łódź for membership in the Futures Photography platform.

Since 2015 Karol is also an art curator of a long-term photography documentary project ‘The Września Collection’ (Kolekcja Wrzesińska) whose patron is the Mayor of the City and Municipality of Września. As part of his work on this project, he is collaborating with leading Polish photographers to create photo books and exhibitions about his hometown of Września.

Nieustannie fascynuje go odnajdywanie surrealizmu w wiernym rejestrowaniu rzeczywistości za pomocą fotografii. Jego prace poruszają tematy związane z problemami środowiskowymi, obroną wojskową i cywilną oraz sytuacją fizycznego i mentalnego unieruchomienia. Fotograf samouk, twórca photobooków, kurator i wykładowca. Jako fotograf brał udział w kilkunastu wystawach zbiorowych. Mieszka i pracuje w Poznaniu.

Członek ZPAF - Związku Polskich Artystów Fotografików. Stypendysta Marszałka Województwa Wielkopolskiego w dziedzinie kultury. Wykładowca fotografii w Instytucie Sztuki Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Warszawie. W 2025 nominowany przez Fotofestiwal w Łodzi do członkostwa w platformie Futures Photography.

Od 2015 roku jest kuratorem artystycznym projektu fotograficznego Kolekcja Wrzesińska, którego mecenasem jest Burmistrz Miasta i Gminy Września. W ramach pracy nad projektem współpracuje z czołowymi polskimi fotografkami i fotografami, tworząc photobooki i wystawy, które dotyczą jego rodzinnego miasta Wrześni.
